Someone in your life has a disability.

You may be aware of the impact that this has on their quality of life and how they interact with the world or not. For me, this is my husband of 25 years.

Gustavo lost the hearing in his left ear many years ago, and has struggled with day to day conversations and his view of the world ever since. For the most part this hasn’t affected our family dynamics but as we both age and our hearing starts to degenerate naturally, I notice differences in how we both behave now because of the loss of hearing.

We all adapt to the world around us and most of us take it for granted that we can find another way to accomplish what we set out to do when we get stuck. What if the tools used prevent this adaptation? Or worse yet, doesn’t even take your disability into account and excludes you from accomplishing your task?

A former teammate demonstrated how someone who wouldn’t be able to use a mouse would interact with a recent website that he built and this really shocked me. I knew in an abstract way that there would be limitations to navigating around the website, but not how much of an impact that this would have on what can’t be accessed easily…or at all.

Now ask yourself, do you know how your email performs in an accessibility test? Are you preventing people from interacting with your organization because you haven’t prioritized a real look at accessibility in your digital ecosystem today?

It’s time to make sure that everyone has access to your organization today.
